Maine Township Passes 2008 Tax Levy Ordinances
Dec. 3, 2007 — The Maine Township Board of Trustees, Tuesday night, passed the 2008 tax ordinance calling for a levy of $4,291,926 for the General Fund and General Assistance. The actual amount collected through Cook County next year will almost assuredly be less since it is based on the Consumer Price Index which is not determined until sometime next Spring. The 2007 levy was $3,999,680.
At the same time, the Board of Trustees approved a tax ordinance for Road and Bridge, calling for a levy of $1,778,300. The 2007 levy was $1,694,600. The same Consumer Price Index applies to these funds used by the highway department to maintain roads, sewers, and other related areas in the unincorporated area.
Township tax levies are governed by Illinois state statute which establishes a tax cap of up to a 5% annual increase without referendum.
Maine Township covers most of Des Plaines, Park Ridge, parts of Niles, Morton Grove, and Glenview, and a small portion of Rosemont. The township serves one of the largest populations living in an unincorporated area in the state of Illinois.
